Today, July 31 is the birth anniversary of Munshi Premchand (1880 – 1936) – the celebrated Hindi and Urdu writer. He’s considered to be one of the foremost Indian writers and an expert storyteller.
It’s a great idea to read some of the wonderful books written by exemplary authors because it’s an entertaining way of gaining an education. Most great literature is not just pleasurable and inspiring, but also informative with lessons in humanities, language, and sometimes even science woven into it 😉
I was presented with a book of his short stories as a prize after some competition and still remember a few of them. My favorite was “Bade Bhai Saab, which was a story about two brothers and I could relate to it very easily because I have a younger brother 🙂
Many of his stories and novels have been translated into many languages and also adapted into movies and television series (Godaan, Shatranj ke Khilari, Gaban, Heera Moti, Do Bigha Zamin, Sadgati, Nirmala etc.).
While “#Premchand” was his pen name, his real name was Dhanpat Rai, and he was born in Lamhi – a village near Varanasi. His writing was very realistic and representative of the social and political conditions of his time. He was influenced by the Indian Independence movement and many of his short stories had patriotic overtones. The other topics he wrote on were corruption, widowhood, prostitution, the feudal system, poverty, colonialism, farmers conditions and the oppression of labor.
